“Next up on Full Spectrum is Radiate Don’t Fear the Quietus – the debut long-player from Shanna Sordahl. A long-time fixture of the Bay Area’s experimental music community, Shanna spent years developing the processes and concepts that lie at the heart of these compositions.
In many ways – this album represents the documentation of a significant shift in Shanna’s lifestyle, wherein she made the conscious effort to rewire her lifestyle around a more focused creative discipline. It also serves as a starkly personal meditation on the depth and timelessness of memory, conveying the ways in which multifaceted loss have impacted the course of her life. In her words, “past, present, and future coexist – memory doesn’t move in one direction.”
Recorded in a flurry of activity between December 2017 and February 2018 in her shared practice and studio space in Jack London Square in Oakland, CA, the album itself unspools as a beguiling matrix of texture, melody, and atmosphere. Taking Shanna’s amplified cello as a starting point, she expanded her tonal palette with the addition of voice and electronics, including a custom SuperCollider effects processing ensemble, MS-20 mini, and a selection of Buchla synthesis modules; but it is Shanna’s preternatural feel for timbral changes, rather than just leaning on melodic and rhythmic variations in her material, that generate a deep sense of space for the listener to sink into.”
